Devji Vankar is a traditional weaver from Bhujodi village in Kutch. He has been in the craft for over 40 years, and his son works with him. They make shawls, stoles and yardage in the distinctive Kutch style with extra weft designs. They sell these at exhibitions and to direct clients in Bhuj, Ahmedabad and Delhi. The veteran weaver has seen drastic changes in the market for his craft. He appreciates that customers far away buy his products and there is a lot of government support for the craft. However, he also feels life was simpler and more friendly earlier; now corruption often makes it difficult to avail of schemes meant for artisans.
